Remote Connection to ASU Computers

ASU Online students are able to access computers and the associated laboratory instruments they are connected too, through a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Remote desktop is the ability to connect with and use a faraway desktop computer from a separate computer. Remote desktop users can access their desktop, open and edit files, and use applications as if they were actually sitting at their desktop computer. Employees often use remote desktop software to access their work computers when they are traveling or working from home.

The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a protocol, or technical standard, for using a desktop computer remotely. Remote desktop software can use several different protocols, including RDP and virtual network computing (VNC), but RDP is the most commonly used protocol. There are lots of common RDP, VNC and free proprietary remote desktop client and servers that lets you remote-control Linux, MacOS or Windows 10/11 computers.

Currently, we are using NoMachine as the default remote desktop application. The software is freely available and easy to install on any computer, tablet, or mobile device. If you are remotely connecting to an ASU computer from OFF-CAMPUS, you first need to connect to the ASU VPN.

NoMachine – Remotely connecting to ASU Computer

  • Download and install the free NoMachine client on your local computer, tablet or mobile device.
  • Connect to the ASU VPN
  • Click the + ‘Add’ button in the NoMachine client
    • Name: Any descriptive name for the remote connection (example: ASU 400 MHz NMR)
    • Host: the ASU IP address of the computer (example: 129.219.52.109), port: 4000, protocol: NX. (together this would be: (nx://129.219.52.109:4000)
  • Now you should be able to highlight the computer you want to connect too, and click ‘Connect’ (or double-click the icon).
    • It will prompt you for the login username (chm343) and password (provided to students on ASU Canvas).
  • You should now have a window that displays the remote computer and have complete control of this computer. The same as if you were sitting directly at the computer (except maybe a little slower, especially if you have a slow internet connection!)
